“10:15 Saturday Night”–The Cure

Live At Praça da Apoteose, Rio de Janeiro, 26 de Janeiro de 1996

This has always been an incredibly cool song.  If any band captures my life through High School it has to be The Cure. This song shows every facet– the tension, desire, and immense boredom.

Watch these 3 videos as the song devolves from stadium rock into a bare boned, rage restrained, reggae infused punk groove.

1979 version does it for me. I love the minimalism, the clock ticking bass line, water dripping high hat, unmistakable skank guitar, and Robert Smith’s singular, pleading voice.

Live at the Nakano Sun Plaza in Tokyo October 17, 1984

10:15 on a Saturday night
And the tap
Drips under the streetlight
And I’m sitting in a kitchen sink
And the tap drips
Drip, drip, drip, drip

Waiting for the telephone to ring
And I wonder where she’s been
And I’m crying for yesterday
And the tap drips
Drip, drip, drip, drip

10:15 on a Saturday night
And the tap
Drips under the streetlight
And I’m sitting in a kitchen sink
And the tap drips
Drip, drip, drip, drip

“The Man Who Sold The World”–David Bowie

Live at the Beeb 2000

Such a mystery wrapped in an enigma this extraterrestrial ballad evokes. When I hear the song it strikes me as a feature film within so few stanzas. Bowie was channeling some deep other in those years. Below are 2 great Nirvana versions then some alternative Bowie versions follow.

We passed upon the stair, we spoke of was and when
Although I wasn’t there, he said I was his friend
Which came as some surprise I spoke into his eyes
I thought you died alone, a long long time ago
Oh no, not me
I never lost control
You’re face to face
With The Man Who Sold The World
I laughed and shook his hand, and made my way back home
I searched for form and land, for years and years I roamed
I gazed a gazely stare at all the millions here
We must have died alone, a long long time ago
Who knows? not me
We never lost control
You’re face to face
With the Man who Sold the World

That song for me always exemplified kind of how you feel when you’re young, when you know there’s a piece of yourself that you haven’t really put together yet… this great searching, this great need to find out who you really are.

“Mirror in the Bathroom” –The English Beat

The Beat – Mirror In The Bathroom, Rockpalast, 1980

This Ska gem written by The English Beat singer and guitarist Dave Wakeling reminds me of my youth in the late 80s of Philly. Hair pouring over the front of my face, short and jagged around the ears and back of head. Tight jeans and Chuck Taylors and some black or checkered button down shirt worn for the night out with my mates. Trying to run the streets like I had any idea what I was doing and like we wouldn’t end up home alone with a couple of crappy beers from the Greek take-out on Spruce that would serve us kids.

Then there was this song to Skank around the room to and it was all alright.

Mirror in the bathroom
please talk free
The door is locked
just you and me.
Can I take you to a restaurant
that’s got glass tables
You can watch yourself
while you are eating.
Mirror in the bathroom
I just can’t stop it,
Every Saturday you see me
window shopping.
Find no interest in the
racks and shelves
Just a thousand reflections
of my own sweet self, self, self…
Mirror in the bathroom
You’re my mirror in the bathroom
You’re my mirror in the bathroom
You’re my mirror in the bathroom…
Mirror in the bathroom
recompense
For all my crimes
of self defense.
Cures you whisper
make no sense
Drift gently into
mental illness.
Mirror in the bathroom
please talk free
The door is locked
just you and me.
Can I take you to a restaurant
that’s got glass tables
You can watch yourself
while you are eating.
Mirror in the bathroom
Mirror in the bathroom…
