“Where The Streets Have No Name”–U2

Live At Slane Castle

U2 – Live on a roof 7th and Main Street in LA in 1987

I almost picked “One” as my first U2 posting but I stumbled upon the Slane Castle performance and realized instantly “Where The Streets Have No Name” is signature rocking out U2. The performance at Slane Castle, Ireland is a week after Bono’s father past away (respect), and Bono’s performance is transcendent.

The second track stopped traffic on a steaming day in LA as they pulled a Beatles to play a roof top jam that get’s shut down by johnny law.

U2 is the ultimate stadium rock, anthem band. No group does it bigger and this is being written by a disciple of The Who. Sorry Pete.

Note the covers below by Muse and 30 Seconds to Mars.

I want to run, I want to hide
I want to tear down the walls that hold me tonight
I want to reach out and touch the flame
Where the streets have no name
I want to feel sunlight on my face
I see that rain cloud disappearing without a trace
But I can dance, dance, dance in the dirty rain

Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
We’re still building, then burning down love
We’re burning down love
And when I go there, I go there with you
It’s all I can do

Give it up

The cities a flood and our love turns to rust
We’re beaten and blown by the wind
We’re trampled in dust
I’ll show you a place with no sorrow or pain

Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
We’re still building, then burning down love
We’re burning down love
And when I go there, I go there with you
It’s all I can do

Oh love
Love, love, love

Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
We’re still building, then burning down love
We’re burning down love
And when I go there, I go there with you
It’s all we can do

“Hallelujah”–Leonard Cohen

Gets better with age: Cohen performing Hallelujah 2009.

An Early Cohen Version

The fact is my heart still aches that Jeff Buckley is dead. Yes, Leonard Cohen wrote this song but for me Jeff Buckley owns it.

Cohen’s career was in a dark period and when he released Various Positions in 1984, people did not even connect much at the time to the song. Fact is it was not until John Cale and Jeff Buckley each covered Hallelujah nearly ten years later did peoples’ eyes open to this masterful prayer.

Here is a great article that will tell you all you need to know about possibly the greatest song of all time:  The Holy or the Broken Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley, and the Unlikely Ascent of “Hallelujah”

John Cale

I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time when you let me know
What’s really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who has seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don’t even know the name
But if I did, well, really, what’s it to you?
There’s a blaze of light in every word
It doesn’t matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch
I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah

“Gentle Spirit”–Jonathan Wilson

Gentle Spirit By Jonathan Wilson at TriStudiosTV

This is the most extraordinary musician I have come across in a decade. I have been exploring his music all day from the 2011 Gentle Spirit on Bella Union, and the forthcoming Fanfare, due for release in 2013. You all must check this out!

Jonathan Wilson performs Gentle Spirit. A field recording by James Minchin III.

A hundred blowing up in the headlines
We’ve see it all before
The powers are killing the paupers for some idea of God or whoever

Gentle spirit find our hearts
Gentle spirit find our hearts

Following the leaders with sickness
Ones with no the love within
Peddled cheap drugs all this hatred
Let these words resonate
Everything born from love

Gentle spirit find our hearts
Gentle spirit find our hearts
Gentle spirit find our hearts

Hey don’t you know the circle is the melody
Beauty is a melody
Wonderful the thought of all
Circles are inside of love
Love it is a melody
Beauty is a feeling
Closest to your spirit core
The core it is a circle
Life it is a melody
In the end in the an addiction
Love it is an apple core
Before the fruit was beautiful
Now it is a circle
Life and death a cycle
Cycle is a cadence
Know there are no measureables
Melody is a circle
Melody is a circle
Melody is a circle
Sit beside me and stay a while
Let me feel my life through you
Though we may not last forever
Forever all I’m melodies

Gentle spirit find our hearts
Gentle spirit find our hearts
Gentle spirit find our hearts
Gentle spirit find our hearts
Gentle spirit find our hearts
Gentle spirit find our hearts
Gentle spirit find our hearts

“Echoes”–Pink Floyd

Watch this musical and cinematic miracle. Pink Floyd live in Pompeii in the remnants of the Colosseum playing an over 24 minute work of art, pure aural and visual splendor.

If you have never seen this, now is the time!!!!!!!!

Overhead the albatross
Hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
An echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine.

And no one called us to the land
And no one knows the where’s or why’s.
Something stirs and something tries
Starts to climb toward the light.

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me.
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand
The best I can.

And no one called us to the land
And no one crosses there alive.
No one speaks and no one tries
No one flies around the sun….

Almost everyday you fall
Upon my waking eyes,
Inviting and inciting me
To rise.
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning.

And no one sings me lullabyes
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky.
