“Creep”–Radiohead

Radiohead – Creep (LIVE MTV BEACH HOUSE) 1994 (This one Rocks!!)

The song that exploded Radiohead into my world and likely the whole wide world is so great that as you can see below everyone from Macy Gray, The Pretenders to Moby try to cover it.

Do we love it because we feel like maybe we are all just creeps deep down?

Radiohead-Creep Live 1997

When you were here before
Couldn’t look you in the eye
You’re just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry

You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You’re so fucking special

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here

I don’t care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul

I want you to notice
When I’m not around
You’re so fucking special
I wish I was special

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here

She’s running out the door
She’s running
She run, run, run, run
Run

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You’re so fucking special
I wish I was special

But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here
I don’t belong here

Whatever the reason for the broad fascination, I love it because the song hovers precariously between poetic and unsettling.

Imagine Live – John Lennon – 72

John Lennon combines lyrics about world peace and makes us imagine a world without hate.  He does this with simple piano music that is so deep and beautiful, well, it just doesn’t get any better than this.  Plus, it was our wedding song.  😉 (Dina, PA)

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

“Blind Willy McTell”–Bob Dylan

Released in 1991 on the The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961–1991

Dylan Plays “Blind Willie McTell” Live

Dylan’s folk ballad, “Blind Willie McTell” reminds me of the southern fiction of Faulkner or O’Conner. The story telling is at once dark, vivid, beautiful, and enigmatic. The extraordinary power of the language is still second to the plaintiff blues of the melody. This uniquely American song is written by a great American literary giant at the height of his story telling powers. At once lyric and narrative Dylan opens with:

Seen the arrow on the doorpost
Saying, “This land is condemned
All the way from New Orleans
To Jerusalem.”
I traveled through East Texas
Where many martyrs fell
And I know no one can sing the blues
Like Blind Willie McTell.

To follow an ominous beginning, Dylan drives it home like a shank in the gut:

Well, God is in heaven
And we all want what’s his
But power and greed and corruptible seed
Seem to be all that there is
I’m gazing out the window
Of the St. James Hotel
And I know no one can sing the blues
Like Blind Willie McTell

“Behind Blue Eyes”–The Who

This Performance is Real

“Behind Blue Eyes” is full heart ballad with a power chord catharsis.  Peter Townsend and The Who expresse all insecurity and self doubt laid bare. This slow burner surprises with a big howling release. The song carries dark emotions, self destructive anger, and raw hormones. As listeners we go from heartfelt crooning to stomping around the room pumping our fist, shouting Townsend’s lyrics:

When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool.

This heartfelt performance includes one rock and roll’s greatest climactic moments as the Daltry rumbles through an angry, defiant and finally vulnerable rant before the final refrain, “if I shiver/ please give me a blanket/ keep me warm/ let me wear your coat.” The listener might wonder if the villain causing destruction might simply need some kindness and compassion.
