“While My Guitar Gently Weeps”–The Beatles

I couldn’t find a live Beatles version but hear this recorded version with a lovely film montage of the life of George Harrison.

I’ve never been a big fan of the Beatles. Don’t boo me.  I get that they are one of the keys to the American rock explosion and a truly great band, yet my music heart was just focused on other artists.

Every time I hear this song though my chest tightens and my blood warms.  It must be those achingly sad guitar wails and the  gloomy, lovely lyrics.

What follows is an amazing version and one of the greatest guitar solos I have ever seen on film. Check Prince out for yourself, it begins at 3:30.

Prince, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne and others perform “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” at the 2004 Hall of Fame Inductions.

Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney perform at the Queen Golden Jubilee.

I look at you all see the love there that’s sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at the floor and I see it need sweeping
Still my guitar gently weeps

I don’t know why nobody told you
how to unfold your love
I don’t know how someone controlled you
they bought and sold you

I look at the world and I notice it’s turning
While my guitar gently weeps
With every mistake we must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps

I don’t know how you were diverted
you were perverted too
I don’t know how you were inverted
no one alerted you

I look at you all see the love there that’s sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at you all
Still my guitar gently weeps

Oh, oh, oh
oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
yeah yeah yeah yeah

A lovely new version by Santana.

And one by Toto; this surprised me:

Jake Shimabukuro is a genius

“Let’s Go Crazy”–Prince

Prince, Icon honoree, performs LIVE at the Billboard Music Awards 2013

Besides being sexy, funky, and smart as hell, Prince is a guitar God. Just watch these videos if you have any doubt. For some Genius is magic; listen to this track to see genius as equal parts skill, vision, and passion, yet don’t forget the final dash of F.U.

Dearly beloved, we have gathered here today
To get through this thing called life
Electric word life it means forever and that’s a mighty long time
But I’m here to tell you there’s something else
The afterworld, a world of never ending happiness
You can always see the sun, day or night
So when you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills
You know the one Dr. Everything’ll Be Alright
Instead of asking him how much of your time is left?
Ask him how much of your mind, baby
‘Cause in this life things are much harder than in the afterworld
This life you’re on your own
And if the elevator tries to bring you down
Go crazy punch a higher floor
If you don’t like the world you’re living in
Take a look around you at least you got friends
Come on lady for friendly word
She picked up the phone, dropped it on the floor
Ahh, ahh is all I heard
Are we gonna let the elevator
Bring us down, oh, no let’s go
Let’s go crazy, let’s get nuts
Look for the purple banana
‘Til they put us in the truck, let’s go
All excited but we don’t know why
Maybe it’s ’cause we’re all gonna die
And when we do, what’s it all for
Better live now before the grim reaper
Come knocking on your door
Are we gonna let the elevator
Bring us down, oh, no let’s go
Let’s go crazy, let’s get nuts
Look for the purple banana
‘Til they put us in the truck, let’s go
Come on baby let’s get nuts
Yeah, crazy
Let’s go crazy
Are we gonna let the elevator bring us down
Oh, no let’s go, go crazy
I said let’s go, go crazy
Let’s go, let’s go, go, let’s go
Dr. Everything’ll Be Alright
Make everything go wrong
Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill
Hang tough children
He’s comin’
He’s comin’
Comin’
Take me away
